Saturday mornings have of late become a little more worthwhile for me here in Mwanza, Tanzania – thanks to volunteering to teach a group of disadvantaged youngsters from the local community.
When we looked into teaching in Tanzania, one of the reasons my husband and I applied to Isamilo International School in Mwanza, was so we could help out with their Saturday School programme, which helps young people who otherwise would not have access to English lessons at a private school.
In addition to English and maths lessons, taught voluntarily by teachers and students at Isamilo school, children aged between 10 and 15 have access to activities including swimming, basketball, art, drumming, cricket and football.
I firmly believe that the most important thing you can do in life is to educate others and share your skills and knowledge, as Malcolm X famously said:
“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”
Here are some of my favourite photographs from Saturday School so far.
